A Quiz and Some Catch Up

We started with a short quiz on chapter 13 and then students had the period to catch up and even do a bit of extra credit art.

Rebellion Revisited & Ch. 12-13

After discussing yesterday's article a bit, we talked about writer's notebook grades, read chapter 12 out loud, and then had 20 minutes or so of time to work on wrapping up our online work from recent days and tonight's homework, the DJ for chapters 12 and 13.

Rebels WITH a Cause

Today we read a nonfiction article about teenage rebellion at CommonLit.org. Students read the article, did the assessment, and then wrapped up the period with a short writing assignment about Holden Caulfield as a rebel. Links to the article and assignment are at Unified Classroom.

Chapters 8-9

After a bit of writing linking yesterday's poem to The Catcher in the Rye, we read chapter 8 out loud, and then students had the time to finish chapter 9 and their DJ for tomorrow. If they didn't finish, they should do it for HW.

A Break from Catcher

Today students shared their homework for chapters 6 and 7, and then we spent the rest of the period looking at Audre Lorde's poem "Hanging Fire."

After a bit of DJ practice and a bit of discussion of the returned exit tickets, Students had the period to read chapter 7 and finish the DJ. If they didn't finish, they should do so for HW.

After a brief review of chapters 2 and 3, we read and discussed chapter 4 together. Students had the rest of the period to read chapter 5 and do the written part of their DJ.

Today we practiced a bit of analytical writing, read the rest of chapter two aloud, and then students had the remainder of the period to read chapter three and do their DJ entries, see below. This should be finished for HW if necessary.

Our First Novel: The Catcher in the Rye

Today we started by thinking a bit about how we can be better readers, and then we went and got our first book of the year, The Catcher in the Rye. We read chapter one in class and started the first dialectical journal entry.

Email Final Drafts

Students had the period today to finish typing and revising their formal emails of introduction. They are due by midnight tonight both via email and turned in at Google Classroom.

Formal Email Drafting

Students had the whole period today to write a draft of their formal email in their writer's notebook and get started typing their final draft at Google Classroom. Tomorrow will be dedicated to revision, and final drafts are due tomorrow evening.

Formal Intro Email

After looking at a short poem about email etiquette, students corrected a few sample emails to review expectations. We ended the period by doing some prewriting for the letter we'll be starting tomorrow.
